O Supreme Purusha, I offer my humble obeisances to You who are the highest and most Superior in all aspects. There may be entities who control many things, You are Superior to all of them ,You are Superior to those who are free from the bondage of samsaara, as well as those enmeshed in it,You are Superior to Shri Lakshmi also as You are the sole bestower of their status,You are the cause for the actualization of their innate abilities which would never see the light of day, without Your benevolence and grace. Your generous compassion sustains all others. This generosity is Your inherent nature and You have the necessary power to bestow. The powers of knowledge, strength, control, resources, resilence and brilliance find their source in You. You are hence the most auspicious One with control on all others.

The name “purushottama” is the apt name which describes the soverign powers of Vishnu. In the bhagavad Gita, Krishna tells Arjuna about His magnificence in the fifteenth chapter and describes the different entities who may appear to be powerful but are actually sustained by Him. He is not sustained by anyone and everyone has to defer to Him. The sun and the moon may light up the sky but they can never light Him up. His abode is totally unique and special and great, for one who goes there never returns. He resides in the heart lotus of every soul and regulates every thought, word and deed. He resides in the stomach and digests the food. He bestows knowledge, initiates loss of memory. He is only One revealed by all the vedas. Dasaru uses a word,”bahuvaada” to describe  “utkrishTa”. His greatness extends infinitely in innumerable fields. It knows no restrictions and such a Supreme personality is known by the name “purushOttama”. The word “namo” after this reveals the emotion of this speech addressed to Vishnu. It implies the realization of the omnipotence of the Lord ,”bahula utikrishTa” and the desire to surrender completely to such a capable master.

Every action in the universe if performed by this Purushothama, using others as instruments to function as per His will. The order in the Universe clearly points to the fact that there should be uniquely omnipotent being who can control everything and keep it functioning as per the design of the universe. The Sun has an governing deity known as “Surya”, the Prana or life force is inside Surya and Purushottama is the ultimate controller inside Prana.

What would happen if the Sun suddenly dissappeared?

Solar eclipse

[Anything in orbit around the Sun is basically moving fast enough to be in a constant state of freefall towards it. If the planets, for example, suddenly stopped moving they would immediately be pulled towards the Sun and fall into it.

So, let’s imagine that, due to some unknown reason, our Sun suddenly vanished. In this instance all the planets, asteroids, comets and whatever else would retain their forward motion. Therefore, rather than fall towards the now nonexistent Sun, they would fly off in a straight line into space.] More at …….

What would happen if the Sun disappeared?

Even at a traffic intersection where there is no authoritative controller, the vehicles move about in a hap-hazard way and cause accidents and jams. The universe with its complex structure and design definitely has a Supreme controller who can never be disobeyed by anyone anytime. All things happen as per His will only and He is the one who performs the tasks through others.

After the word ‘namo’ comes the extended explanation of the phrases before “namo” which is actually a direct representation of the corresponding Brihati sahasra mantra. Here Dasaru declares that He is superior to many who are powerful, who may be in the state of moksha, who may be in amukta state , who is also superior to even Shri Lakshmi. Here the word “Shri Lakshmi:” is of significance. It conveys the greatness of Lakshmi as “shri” one who is immersed in bliss. Her innate natural devotion to the Lord is the cause for her constant happiness. Her knowledge of Vishnu’s immense and infinite abilities and attributes makes Her wonder in awe and thus get immersed in bliss.

The knowledge and complete faith in the existence of a Supreme All powerful controller is a great relief for those in samsaara as it removes the constant nagging fear about things done or undone, decisions made or not made etc. When He is the kind master, we can remain in patient understanding that He has a reason for everything. It may not be obvious at first. It is no wonder that the Gita prescribes acceptance of His will for redressal of accumulation of karma. This acceptance should be spontaneous and such spontaneity can come only with a firm faith and knowledge of His Supremacy and overall control.

Shri rAghavendra swamigala stuthi – By Shri Prasanna Shrinivasa dasaru

Kannada script for this song is available at the bottom of this page.

On the occasion of Rayara aradhana mahotsava, let us contemplate on this stuti. Dasaru has acknowledged Rayaru’s grace at the first instance itself saying that it is because of “your grace” that I am here . “The very fact that I am engaged in singing your glory is proof of your grace.” So he moves on to seek uplift-ment from the guru. The phrase “ghanna dayadali” seeks deep compassion while submiting one’s non-entitlement to seek such a great gift(for the gift from the guru is the greatest gift) ,yet pleads with the guru to shower his grace which is deep and broad enough to overcome the reasons for non-entitlement like 1) previous bad karmas which cause grief now,  2)being unable to control the vagaries of the mind which hankers after pleasure 3)not being dedicated to the path of intuitive discovery propagated by the ancients and many more ….

aja-kshepane is one nirvachana for aja dhatu. kshepane comes from kshipa dhaatu which means prerane. He meaning “aja”  is the sole instigator of all action. Why so?Because He is the source of all strengths and is complete in all respects without depending on anyone or anything at anytime. He envolepes  and fills the entire universe with energy. This beautiful meaning for “aja” is given by Shri Bannanje Govindacharyaru.

O raghavendra gurugale, you are the foremost of the devotees of such an eminent Supreme Lord, I submit myself and surrender to you.Your fame extends in the three worlds and I repose complete faith in you. Please rip off the fears in my mind and bestow lightness and purity of mind.

“Now that I have asked such a big boon of you, I wonder, Am I really worthy of such grace! O gururaaja  the foremost among the groups of jnaanis, the seven dhatus in my body are assailed by different diseases and I plead with you to alleviate them with your deep and divine grace. “

The seven dhatus are tvak, charma, rudhira, mamsa, majja, medhas and asti. These dhatus are the basis of the human structure and form. Any disturbance in their composition riddles the body with disease. The cure for any disease is the recognition of the malfunctioning in the particular dhatu and rectifying it through chanting of mantras in one of the seven appropriate chandas’. This is one of the secrets revealed by Shri Bannanje Govindacharyaru during his exposition of the Aiterya Upanishad.

It could be that Dasaru has envisaged the power of contemplation of Rayaru and beseeched him with this knowledged seeking upliftment from disease.

One of the biggest challenges of a human being is  having oneness in thought, word and deed which is absolutely essential in sadhana. Without this integrity no amount of study or penance will give any fruit. Srimad Bhagavathma clarifies this in the first and opening verse stating that the fittedness to study this text is one who has integrity and is not a person of many faces.

Dasaru submits to the guru saying,” I chant the name of Hari but my mind seeks sensual pleasures. You are the king of the ones who are well versed in the knowledge behind each word, please uplift me whose every sense organ is after pleasure. Contemplation on you is the means to the destruction of all kinds of negative aspects of the jiva.

Shri Purandara dasaru has composed a song

“negeyu barutide yenage nageyu barutide…..” O what a pity . It is quite a comedy! People stand on the edge of the river in the early morning rotating their beads but alas their minds are visualising something sensual! It is ridiculous to see them so blissfully unaware of their failing and instead assuming that they are engaged in religious duty.”

You are  the composer of enlightening works which resemble the sun and shines light on the darkness in the form of the wrong interpretations of ancient texts. You have provided the nectarine milk in the form of the commentary “Chandrika” which sends the readers into raptures of exhilaration .O guru who is very dear to Devakinandana, I bow down to you in complete surrender.

Rayaru has sung in praise of Krishna -Krishna charitra manjari . His kannada composition “indu enage govinda ninna paadaaravindava tOro ,mukunda” also exemplify his devotion to the Lord whom Dasaru addresses here as  “devakinandana”.

You have composed the intricate explanations of the upanishads.Your compositions such as the muktavali ,parimala, geeta vivriti and many many more are all extremely pleasing to Shripati. You are “sumEdha” the one with extremely radiant memory.

“You dwell in the world of the glory of Krishna the vanquisher of Narakasura, son of Varaha.Your mind is always engaged in the contemplation of Krishna. You are the benevolent tree which bestows the desires of devotees , I seek shelter at your feet .You are the moon which rises in the ocean of spiritual shastras composed by Madhwa the son of Madhyageha bhatt. Please remove this poverty in me and bestow devotion and knowledge of the Supreme Lord.”

Narakasura has the poverty of never being content, poverty of devotion and knowledge.Krishna vanquished Narakasura and so also shall He vanquish our foes if we seek to contemplate on Him using the methods ennumerated by the Guru , following in the path shown by the guru and abiding by it. “guruvina gulaamanaaguva tanaka doreyadanna mukuti “

O guru, I surrender and seek protection from you. You are the clear reflection(pratibimba) of that Prasanna Shrinivasa who is the father of Brahma, who is boundless, full of infnite auspicious attributes, flawless and resides in Pavana. You are dear to the Lord Vedavyasa, Narahari, who holds the bamboo stick-Krishna, Rama, who holds the bow and Hayagreeva who is the father of knowledge and giver of life in the form of knowledge also to Brahma. “

Vayu being the main prateeka for worship of Vishnu, Dasaru glorifies the Lord as being resident in Pavana. The five forms of the Lord are dear to Rayaru and these are contemplated on by dasaru . He uses a completely novel address for  “Krishna” the Gopala with the bamboo stick.
