This is the Sowmya Keshava swamy idol at Nagamangala. The temple of Chenna Keshava near Hassan also has a very old and big idol of Keshava.

Acharya Madhwaru gave the vigraha of Keshava to Erki mutt Upadhyaya and then went to Kokkada where he began the composition of the work “KrishnAmrutha maharnava” and it may be because of this that he begins this with a prayer to Keshava. Here is a Kannada translation of the opening prayer by Gurugalu Shri Bannanje Govindacharyaru.

Let that Keshava who bestows the state of deathlessness

On those who sublimely offer their gratitude ,

Worship Him with abiding devotion

Think and contemplate on Him,

Sing , dance and rejoice in His magnifcience

And listen to His glory in rapture, protect and uplift me. ||1||

Shri Prasanna Shrinivasa dasaru’s poetic commentary on this name of the Lord translates to ,” O Master and Lord, Keshava, I offer my humble obeisances to You again and again. You are the giver of fame to Brahma and Lakshmi. You enable them and make them perform as per their potential and shower bliss on them for the fulfillment of service, well done. Serving You is their source of bliss. You are the only One who is eligible to be contemplated on day after day and night after night, eternally.O Janardhana, You are the destroyer of the terrible wicked demon named kEshi. You are the controller of Brahma and Shiva being the one of Supreme unparalleled strength and power.”

kEshava kEshava shAsaka vaMdE pAshadharArchita shUravarEsha………

Srimad Acharyaru in the fifth stotra among the twelve sings in glory of this nama.

He says, I bow down to You the Supreme Emperor, who is worshipped by Varuna who is worshipped by the Shooras , by the most courageous ones and bestows their wishes.

Shri Kanaka dasaru ,”Isha ninna charaNa bhajane Asayinda mADUvenu dOsharAshi nAshamADo shrIsha kEshava…”

Shri Prasanna Shrinivasa Dasaru says ,”brahmanigu lakshmigu keerti koDuva swAmi neenu”. Laskhmi who is eternally free from bondage or transformation is the controller of Avyakta tatva which transforms the basic material for creation and Brahma is the creator of Brahmanda.

He is not the selfish task master, but the most compassionate Supreme who inspires excessive devotion towards Himself who , though being in a position to demand and make others acquesence, He does not choose to do it. He gives the opportunity and makes each one perform as their own ability .

Laskhmi is reverred in the world and this reverence is caused by the bountiful glory of the Lord who gives her this status as the Empress of wealth, the symbol of auspiciousness, the compassionate mother. Sri Purandara Dasaru glorifies Lakshmi as being the most blessed, the most reverred and cherished one .”Enu dhanyalo lakumi enthA mAnyalo ” Her service to the Lord is the one that bring Her such glory, disclosing that the Lord has enabled Her to perform such service and bestows the resulting glory.

Brahma too has the great place of “creator”. He resides in Brahma in the same form and makes him do . Brahma is the controller of the chitta, memory shell and it is with his grace that one can use memory to enhance one’s knowledge and move towards the goal of exiting from the cycle of birth and death.

Brahma shabda also means Vayu -MukyaprAna. Vaya-bandana. He holds the entire worlds together. He performs the hamsa japa continuously in all jivas throughout the Brahma kalpa enabling them to engage in sadhana . All this is possible because of the Lord’s grace.

These are just small descriptions of the great works being done by the great entities. If all of these entities are enabled by Keshava – what unimaginable limitless strength must He possess ! The position of Lakshmi is eternal. Brahma and other deities are enabled to discharge their duties for the Brahma kalpa which is along long time 32,104 000   crores of years.

I bow down to this Supreme Keshava again and again.

He is the vanquisher of the wicked demon called Keshi. He destroys the demonic qualities that arise in the mind . Contemplating on His exquisite qualities leads to destruction of the negative qualities in the mind. Dasaru addresses Him as “Janardhana”. The one who destroys the cycle of birth and death. By removing our mental defects and eradicating ignorance, Keshava bestows us with freedom from samsaara .

He is the controller of every deed of everyone beginning from Brahma and Rudra. If one asks How so? The Dasaru replies ,”mahArha balashaali” He is the one who has such ability to control and who is the most capable one worthy of such control too, possessing Supreme unsurpassed strength and power.

22)Shreemate namah: Infinite opulence

sampattuvantane shreemaan namO namO eMBe

shObanaishwarya sundara amita ujwalaroopa

shreepate bhriguraama vaamana vedavyaasa hari

aparimita sukhajnaana balaadi gunapoorNa

When the wealth of the richest man on earth is compared with the wealth on earth the former slides to almost nothing in comparison. Whatever land, gold or property one may own it pales before the amount of land, gold or properties that actually exist.  The Lord of the Universe is Shrimaan. He is the owner of everything at all times. A king may rule a certain land for a time period, after which his successor replaces him. But the Lord is Shrimaan in the truest sense as He is always the Supreme controller for all time. He is the one who is full and complete with all the different kinds of wealth.

Dasaru says ,” O Shreeman, the One of infinite opulence, I bow down to You in humble surrender. Ownership on earth is limited by time, space and many  factors  like birth, upbringing, education and one’s inherent talents. O  Shreeman, Your ownership is sovereign. You decide the owner of every piece and decides the time for which they should own it and then sees to it that it happens. I bow down with gratitude for this sanctifying knowledge. Your form is the source of all purity and positivity. You reign without any equal and are in control of everything. Your wish is the wand which makes things happen. You are alluringly beautiful with boundless radiance. O Shreepate, Brigurama, Vamana, Vedavyasa, Hari. You are completely full of infinite attributes like bliss, knowledge and power.”

The conversation between Jadabharatha and King Rahuguna highlights the temporary nature of all wealth and power on earth. Jadabharatha replies to Rahuguna’s angry and sarcastic outbursts . He says ,” Your thinking that you are the master and I the servant , thus trying to order me, is not correct as it is not the truth. The master today, can be the servant tomorrow. Providence decides and deals out the fortune of the embodied beings.”

This most thought provoking and piognant conversation between the king and the brahmin clearly shows the temporary nature of life and the fortunes that accompany it. After all, this living soul is bound to death by providence so also all one’s possessions and properties. Finally the king who was of firm faith and on the search for the absolute truth fell flat at the feet of the brahmin-Jadabharatha after he heard the philosophical presentation which reveals the opulence of the absolute Supreme, slackens the knot in one’s heart, which hastens the hankering for liberation from the mundane and enthuses one with the thirst for the true knowledge of the eternal.

govindA namO gOviMda namo

govardhana giriyanettida govinda namma rakshisai

mancha bAradu maDadi bAralu kanchu kannaDi bAradu

sanchitaartada dravya baaradu munche maaDida dharmave

In this devaranama Shri Purandara dasaru highlights the eternal truth that the Lord is the most precious entity one should aspire to know within their limited abilities.

The Brahmasutramrita of Shri Prasanna Shreenivasa dasaru explains the first sutra in a few verses. Of that one phrase, “paramapraapya”. He is the foremost among those that should be sought after and His grace is such that He comes to the devotee who is sincere in one’s sadhana. It clearly states that ,”One should engage in contemplation on the Supreme as He bestows the most bountiful wealth in the form of grace which frees one from the travails of samsaara.”

sundara-He has the most alluring form as seen from the incident in the Rasa leela where He finally reappears in front of the gopis after repeated pleading and surrender. “sAkshAn manmatha manmathah” . He is the source of all beauty . Sundara also means purity. Srimaan is the source and bestower of beauty and purity. His glory is matchless and shines forth eternally. He is the only One who can sustain this kind of glory through eternal time and space.

Dasaru mentions Briguraama- the conquerer of the entire clan of kshatriyas who are actually supposed to rule the land but who at that time needed to be squashed because of adharmic practices. He is the true emperor of all time, who can vanquish our foes and burn the papas.

Vamana – He takes the form of a small boy and vanquishes the pride of His devotee Bali who assumes that he is the future ruler of even the kingdom of Indra. He soon realises the truth and bows down in submission . He (Vamana, Vishnu)is the Shrimaan at all times.

Vedavyasa- He is the giver of the wealth in the form of knowledge to the deserving.

Hari- He is the Shrimaan, completely full of bliss who removes the very cause of distress and ensures that His devotees obtain peace and bliss.

If one wonders, Why should all these be true of only “Shrimaan Vishnu” and not anyone else. To that Dasaru answers ,”ಅಪರಿಮಿತ ಸುಖಜ್ಞಾನ ಬಾಲಾದಿ ಗುಣಪೂರ್ಣ” He is limitless, is full of gunas like boundless bliss, infinite knowledge and limitless power.

I bow down in surrender to this Supreme master ,”Shrimaan”.

21)Shri nArasiMhavapushe namah! Neither man nor lion-Unimaginable infinite powers

Man is finite in everything that one does including the life span. The abilities of each one is limited to the resources – physical, mental and spiritual. Though our physical body seems to be in our control it isn’t . For don’t we observe that we neither come into this world by choice nor do we exit it with our choice. Our station in life is pre-determined by many factors including the atmosphere, wealth, health and capabilities we are endowed with,at birth.  But the Lord is always ,“kartum akartum anyata kartum shaktaHa” He can always do what may be possible, what is not possible and the unimaginable too. We cannot even perceive His doings! Isn’t it wonderful!  This attribute of the Lord is revealed a little in His avatara as Narasimha .

Here is the commentary on this name of the Lord by Shri Prasanna Shrinivasa dasaru:

ನಾರಸಿಂಹವಪು ನಮೋ ಧ್ಯಾಯಾನ್ನನೃಸಿಂಹ ಮುರುವ್ರ್-

O Lord Narasimha, You have the most unimaginable form which is neither man nor lion. Even though it is incomprehensible to the finite mind of a soul, I attempt to contemplate a little on Your auspicious form which is complete with Supreme powers, and whose radiance is much more that the brilliance of a crore suns .  Your beloved consort is inseparable from You and You have the most marvellous form with a broad and powerful presence, three  eyes, with rounded arms, strong thighs and legs and carry the chakra and show Your benevolence through Your generous bestowing hand.”

This Nrisimha form is the protector of all. He appeared before Prahalda during that time and brought into play His exquisite supreme powers . Whatever He engages in, is solely for the benefit of the souls. He has no selfish reason to do anything. All His actions are acts of benevolence towards His devotees. The bhagavatham says,”satyam vidhAtum nija bhritya bhaashitam”. He ensures that Brahma’s boon to Hiranyakashipu holds good and at the same  time sees to it that Prahlada is protected and uplifted.

Shri Jagannatha dasaru in the HKS says,

matte chiddEhada oLage

eMbhattu sAviradELu nUri

ppatta aidu nR^isiMha rUpadalliddu jIvarige

nityadali hagaliruLu bappapa

mR^ityuvige tA mR^ityuvenisuva

bhR^ityuvatsala bhaya vinAshana bhAgya saMpanna….HKAS_07-15

“It is totally unimaginable. The jiva is smaller than one by ten thousandth of the tip of a horse’s hair and the Narasimha with His huge and powerful form resides inside the jiva in 80725 forms. “tiliyadO ninnATa tirupatiya veMkaTa” . He is the only One capable of protecting us from the various calamities that can befall one in this samsaara.

Acharya Madhwaru has said that contemplating on Lord Narasimha drives away all the different types of “duritas”.

“duritaadi nivrittayEt”. He destroys the negative effects of bad karma and leads his devotee from the land of darkness to one of light and glory. He is the giver of moksha ,. . Shri Gopaladasaru’s devurunama says,”kAyo shri narasimha ……mrityuge mrityu…”  In the first instance the prayer is to grace his ardent disciple Srinivasa acharya and protect him from untimely death. But that is not all. This samsaara is also “mrityu” as it is temproary and always changing. There is always an end and a beginning . He is the destroyer of this sequence of birth and death.

nIrajabhavAMDOdaya sthiti

kAraNane kaivalya dAyaka

nArasiMhane namipe karuNipudhemage maMgaLava .HKAS_01-01

He is the designer, creator, sustainer and the cause for dissolution of this universe. At the same time, He is the giver of “kaivalya” meaning freedom from the cycle of birth and death which is moksha where there is a state of pure knowledge without any attached ignorace. Knowing Him as the eight-fold dispenser of the world and souls is the pathway to liberation as each every one of these upasana’s leads to the proper moulding of the soul, making it ready for the grace of the Lord.

He is glorified as the creator of fear in the hearts of the wicked and at the same time, gives bliss and peace to His devotees.”narasimha bhaya kara … aashrita janara rakshaka ”  Shri Prasanna Shrinivasa dasaru’s Narasimha mantra. Below is a link for the same…

https://aarshavani.wordpress.com/2016/06/02/shri-narasimha-mantra/

He is the destroyer of evil forces and protects His devotees. This is symbollically shown by the chakra in His hand. The hands which show that He is the giver of the most wonderful gifts to His devotees, point to His infinite benevolence.

20)Shree pradhAna purushEshwarAya namah! Everything is in Hari’s control!

Letting events unfold as they are designed by Hari is the most important constituent of sadhana. Through a process of constant awareness, one can realise the futility of trying to control events, people, and our own choices. They all  unfold as per the design of Hari. Even a blade of grass cannot stir without His will. This is guna of Hari is clearly explained in this nama. Through a proccess of contemplation on His gunas as the controller of Prakriti and Purusha, one can quiet the constant chatter in the mind regarding the goings-on in the world , through His grace. ” sadguNava kaddavara aghava kadivanu anaghaneMdenisi..”

prakritigu purushanigu IshanAgiruvaMthA

pradhAna purushEshwara namO namO eMbe shrIsha

baMda hEtu prakritigu baddamAna jivanIgu

sattAdidAtanu pravartaka swAmi namO Atma

O Supreme giver, the controller of Prakriti and Purusha, You are the foremost giver, being the only self existent being. I bow down to you again and again. O Lord of Shree, both the forces mentioned above namely the binding force -Prakriti which consists of the satva, rajas and tamo gunas governed by the three forms of Lakshmi. The bound one-the jiva , exists exclusively  by Your infinite grace. You propel sentient Prakriti the formidable force which is the base of creation to bestow each jiva with a suitable body to enable them to engage in action as per their capabilities at the right time. You sustain all things sentient and insentient to acheive this end- engagement of the action by the jiva who is bound by Prakriti.

Shri Madhwaacharyaru sings the praise of Ajitha namaka Paramatma as the one who by His mere side glance at Lakshmi, enables her with immense powers. Her powers are such that by a mere glance of grace she engages in  the design and creation of the universe, its sustenence, its dissolution and for the sentient beings she binds with ignorance and releases with jnana at the right times.

Here the omniscience of God is clearly highlighted by talking of the force that binds and the soul that gets bound. Both these are under His Supreme control and obtain sustenence as well as existence only due to His grace. He decides and disburses making people toe the line of their ordained karma etc by deciding to impinge the binding forces on them and making them react as a result of its impact.

Here Jagannatha dasaru also proclaims Hari’s extensive control and abilities . He extols His independent Supreme powers . He says, “You exist in the one with the gunas-Guni ie the jiva, and You exist in the gunas too(satva, rajas, tamo and its abhimani), yet You are neither of them, You are known by those names exclusively because You enable those to exist and exhibit such qualities .You never get bound by anything and feed the chetanas from Brahma downwards their respective fruits of karmas generated by the influence of gunas as per You will. You consume everything at the time of dissolution. All what You do is due to Your immense grace and that is shown by Dasaru using the word ,”vrijinArdana” the destroyer of papa karmas and the grief arising from such karmas  for His true devotees who understand His boundlessness and Supreme unique self , a little as per their eligibility.
